The Archetype of the Female Healer
Over the course of many centuries women have sacrificed their voice and feminine creativity and have found themselves struggling, torn between being either a "voice" or just "a pair of legs" as in the tale of Andersen’s Little Mermaid.
Many Mediterranean women begin an analytical process because they are living a conflict between fertility and sacrifice and do not know how to gain access to their inner feminine healer.
As we know, through the centuries the ancient healing power which belonged to women was suppressed and transferred to men.
The female healer became the witch while imagination, intuition, instinct and sensory perception were demonized.
The archetype of the witch leads us to the archetype of the old wise medicine woman which includes the primordial, intuitive, autonomous creative power of the female healer.
Recent archaeological research allows us to make new hypotheses on the polytheism of primeval Goddesses: they were not only Goddesses of the moon.
In many countries, the Solar Deities were originally female. Both the archaeologist Nanno Marinatos and the Jungian analyst Virginia Beane-Rutter recognized ancient ceremonies of initiation in the beautiful frescoes of Akrotiri.
Beane-Rutter noticed how young virgins could pick crocus flowers growing in the field without feeling the threat of being kidnapped by a god.
Returning to Crete, Nanno Marinatos has recently shown that the main deity of the Minoan Pantheon was a goddess of the emerging sun of the horizon.
Finding the sun in the Underworld helps us to cultivate inner light hidden in the darkest places. Recognizing the feminine nature of the sun at the bottom of the sea helps women withdraw their projections.
The Archetype of the Female Healer allows one to overcome the conflict between sacrifice and fertility in order to reconnect with one’s lost soul, buried under the ashes of the volcano, in the depths of the collective unconscious.
By traveling freely between the worlds of the conscious and unconscious, women can rediscover the ancient faith in the sovereignty of feminine values without labored breathing.
Feminine healing can regenerate the Anima Mundi and invite spirit and instinct to dance together. Are we ready to hear and embody the voices of the primeval Sunrise Goddesses?
